01 — OUR STORY EST. 2006

We started Mess because the internet was getting  boring.

First, we acknowledge the elephant in the room and low key admit we kinda wistfully long for "boring" a little bit these days. Not every day, but man alive it sure is something, this landscape we currently find ourselves in.

Anyhow, 20 years ago, a designer and developer sat down together and thought there had to be a better way, and they both had to have a seat at the table. We're not here to dwell — Tony Soprano once rightly said 'Remember when is the lowest form of communication' — but then and now, it's been a pretty solid way to operate. No matter how we've grown, pivoted and evolved, the core idea of sitting down across a table with a designer and a developer and asking What if? It works.

The internet, the culture, our industry— it's always been changing. It's exciting and exhausting and sometimes it's scary– but a good deal of the time? It's incredibly fun. We're still here because we love doing this stuff. Let's make some cool things on the internet. Let's put things out into the world that we can all be proud of. This is Mess. This is what we do.

02 — HOW WE THINK GENERAL GUIDELINES

We have  a handful of rules.   The rest we figure out as we go.

01

Be kind and candid.

Whether our clients are founder-operated, bootstrapped startups or some of the world’s leading brands, our relationships are honest partnerships based on respect and mutual understanding.

02

Push boundaries further.

Our body of work spans a wide range of industries because our core speciality is asking ourselves and our partners what is possible, not what is expected.

03

Look beneath the surface.

We believe in the power of design beyond aesthetics, and strive to make considerate decisions that account for usability, accessibility and sustainability.

04

Shit happens.

Technology is central to what we do, and we are always moving forward. We are always learning, always exploring, and occasionally making mistakes. We help each other fix them, and then keep moving forward.

05

Count your blessings.

We are extremely fortunate to get to do what we love everyday, and strive to maintain an encouraging space where all voices are heard and different perspectives are considered.

06

Be a little weird.

Life is short and normal is boring.

Also, we don't work with assholes — consider that a bonus 7th rule.

03 — THE PEOPLE AGENCY LEADERSHIP

A dash of circus freaks, wine nerds, and dungeon masters —  and that's just our producer.
